A flex-shaft is probably one of the most useful jewelry making tools in the jewelers studio. It has gain popularity in the past few years because of its versatility and ability to support the creative process for jewelry artist. The flexible shaft is used to drill, grind, sand, carve, buff and stone setting.

This rotary tool consists of four different elements:

  1. Motor: A compact precision motor that is capable of achieving speeds or 13,000 to up to 20,000 revolutions per minute(RPM).

  2. Electronic foot Control: A variable pedal that controls the speed with foot pressure.

  3. Shaft: A spring encased in rubber sheath that carries the rotary motion to a special handpiece.

  4. Handpiece: This is a cylinder that connects the power to a variety of tools. It provides a comfortable and ergonomic way to hold and connect the tool.

This piece of equipment is usually sold in packages that include all the necessary parts. Individual components can be bought separately to up-grade or replace broken parts.

This is a wonderful jewelry making equipment and usually one of the first pieces of equipment purchased by the serious hobbyists or jewelry student. It flexibility makes bench work easier, reduces effort and fatigue, and enhances production time.
